The NDIS has introduced new NDIS Support Lists to provide clearer guidance on what participants can and cannot use their NDIS funding for. While most of the items on the lists aren’t new, their publication helps clear up some grey areas that previously led to confusion.
The good news? Most people won’t be affected by these changes, as the majority of supports already funded by NDIS plans are included. Effective from 3 October 2024, these guidelines are designed to bring clarity and transparency, making it easier for participants to understand what supports are covered.
Here’s a straightforward guide to help you navigate the NDIS Support List, the types of supports available, and what’s excluded.
What is the NDIS Support List?
The NDIS Support List was introduced to clarify the supports that can be funded by the NDIS. Previously, supports were assessed based on being “reasonable and necessary,” but this left room for interpretation and confusion. The new list outlines specific supports eligible for funding and those that aren’t, making it easier for participants to understand their entitlements.
Supports Covered by the NDIS
The NDIS Support List covers a wide range of supports aimed at improving independence, well-being, and social inclusion. Key examples include:
- Personal care: Assistance with dressing, grooming, and meal prep.
- Life skills: Support to develop daily living and independence skills.
- Household help: Assistance with essential chores.
- Therapies: Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
- Assistive technology: Mobility aids, communication devices, and home modifications.
- Early intervention: Supports for children aged 0-9 years.
- Social and community participation: Help with engaging in community activities.
- Accommodation and employment services: Includes specialized disability accommodation and supported employment.
What’s Not Covered?
There are some items and services that the NDIS will not cover under the new Support Lists, including:
- Rent, mortgage payments, or standard household appliances
- Health, life, or travel insurance costs
- Internet devices, mobile phones, and accessories like SIM cards, or internet plans
- Travel-related expenses, such as holiday accommodation or airfares
- Pets and companion animals (except NDIS-funded assistance animals)
- Medicines, vitamins, and products like sunscreen or weight-loss products
- Smoking-related items such as cigarettes or vaping devices
- Clinical mental health care services that fall outside of disability support

Transitioning to the New List
To help ease participants into the changes, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has set a 12-month transition period. During this time, those with existing plans can continue accessing their previously approved supports, even if they are now listed as ineligible. This ensures continuity of care while everyone adjusts.
Requesting Replacement Supports
For participants with unique needs, the NDIA allows for replacement supports. This may include household items or smart devices if they help increase independence or accessibility. To request a replacement, participants must show how the item directly relates to their disability.
How to Navigate the Changes
The NDIS Support List is designed to provide clarity, but participants need to be proactive. If any of your supports have changed, it’s a good idea to review your plan and seek advice from your support coordinator or therapist. They can help advocate for your needs and ensure you’re getting the right supports.
