For those who are not familiar with what SIL NDIS is, the acronym stands for Supported Independent Living and National Disability Insurance Scheme. SIL is provided by NDIS by allocating disability support funding to core and capacity-building supports like Ability Assist. The NDIA only allocates funding after they have received a draft care roster from a provider. If the NDIA approves the roster, the needed funds will then be released to the participant’s NDIS plan.
As a fully registered, fully compliant, child safe and highly experienced NDIS SIL provider based in Melbourne, Ability Assist ensures that we are able to meet the criteria that will lead to the approval of a participant’s SIL through our quality, person-centred services designed for people with disability or complex care needs. Such independent living service support may be for 24/7, or 7 days a week if needed. Because SIL is designed for people with permanent disability, it is automatically extended or renewed every year for an additional 365 days unless a support plan review has been conducted.
Where is SIL administered?
SIL NDIS supports can be administered in an SDA or Specialist Disability Accommodation that is owned and operated by an SDA NDIS registered service provider like Ability Assist. These type of homes are set up as more than just a place to live as the SIL participant can thrive in a shared arrangement while receiving essential support to enhance one’s daily living skills.
While there are many types of dwellings available, equipped and staffed professionally such as villas, flats, or free-standing houses, NDIS will still choose the one which appropriately answers the level of needs of the participant with a disability. At this stage a participant can choose their preferred provider, such as Ability Assist.
Participants who receive SIL usually live with other people with disability, helping the facility ensure cost-effectiveness and community involvement of the participant. However, it is also possible to receive SIL funding and live alone.
Eligibility for SIL NDIS Funding
To become potentially eligible for SIL, the participant needs to meet the three criteria for the consideration of the NDIA. These are:
- If they are over the age of 18
- If they are in need of active disability support for at least 8 hours a day, in addition to some level of support at other times
- If the SIL would meet the NDIS funding criteria
As for point No. 3, the NDIA will take into account if there are other home and living supports that could be more appropriate for the participant. These include specialised disability accommodations, individualised living options, home modifications, short and medium-term accommodations, residential aged care for younger people, and personal care supports, among others.
