Our Approach – Child-Centred Play Therapy
At Ability Assist, we believe every child deserves the chance to explore their feelings and challenges in their own way. That’s why we use child-centred play therapy, a gentle and proven approach developed over 60 years ago. It’s all about building a safe, trusting relationship where children can express themselves through play.
In this approach, children take the lead. They decide how and when to share their feelings, while our therapists create a warm and accepting space to support them. We don’t rush or direct the process but step in to set limits only when needed. This method respects each child’s ability to work through challenges at their own pace.
Research shows that child-centred play therapy is incredibly effective, especially for children aged 3–10. Studies have found that when children lead the play, they make greater progress, and outcomes improve even more when parents are involved. It’s a powerful way to help kids navigate their emotions, build confidence, and develop skills for life.
